“A TV show?”
“You said you were open to TV and movies—”
“No, that’s fine. I just wanted to make sure I heard you correctly.”
“You did.”
“What’s the part for?”
“It’s a new legal drama, and the character you’d be auditioning for is a lawyer.”
“Awesome, thank you.”
“Not a problem. I’ll email you the details and have a carrier deliver the audition scene to you.”
“Perfect.”
“How are things with “An Unexpected Christmas”?”
“Good. We’re almost done filming.”
“After you’re done, the fun begins.”
The fun had already started. “Oh?”
“Parties, interviews, the premiere—the fame.”
And I was hopeful that I would do most of them with my co-star. “Yes, I can’t wait.”
“Well, I don’t want to keep you any longer. I’ll send you that email.”
“Thank you.”
We said our goodbyes, and I got out of my car and headed toward the trailers, stopping at Walker’s. I knocked, and he called out, “Yeah?”
I took that as my invitation to go inside. I opened the door to see him sitting on his couch, reading the script for the day. He stood as I closed the door.
“Hey, baby.”
“Hey.” I wrapped my arms around his neck. “I have news.”
“Oh?” He pulled his head back and looked down into my eyes.
“I have an audition for a TV show.”
He hugged me again. “Congrats!”
“It’s just an audition. Congratulate me if I get the role.”
“You’ll get it.”
“Hope so.”
He pulled back and pressed his lips to mine again. “I know so. What’s the show about?”
“New legal drama.”
“Oooo,” he smirked, “a sexy lawyer. I approve.”
I chuckled and pushed him away playfully. “You’re silly.”
“All I’m sayin’ is that I can’t wait to see you work a courtroom. That’s gonna turn me on something fierce.”
“You like when I take control?” I bit my bottom lip.
“You know I do.”
It was the final day of filming. Our characters had started dating on the down low just like Walker and I were doing. The only difference was Tim was proposing to Tiffany in a ski cabin in the woods with a fire going, and Walker had only asked me to move in with him.
Tim pokes at the fire, making sure it stays lit. “Champagne?” he asks.
I smile. “Sure.”
He goes to the kitchen and returns, handing me a flute of the bubbly wine. I take a sip, and something hits my lips. Pulling the glass away from my mouth, I see that there’s something inside the glass. When I look over at Tim, he’s down on one knee in front of me. He takes the glass and pulls a diamond ring from it.
He grins as he speaks, champagne dripping from his fingers and onto the bearskin rug. “Tiff, my hot babysitter.” I chuckle, and he continues, “I’m crazy about you, and I want to spend all of my Christmases with you. Will you marry me?”
I smile wide, rush into his arms, and reply, “Yes!”
Tim and Tiffany celebrated their engagement with sex in front of the fire, and the movie ended with the promise that they would live together happily ever after.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Walker
It was amazing how, when you weren’t looking for love or wanting love, love fell into your life and changed your entire perspective on what you wanted for your future.
Ayla and I had been dating and keeping a low profile. She wasn’t ready to go public yet because she thought that if it were known that we were dating, it would either give her some sort of perk in the entertainment industry or tank her career. I understood because that was how I felt when it came to my parents. In the beginning, I got roles because of them, but now, I earned them on my own. I also knew that Ayla was an amazing actress, and she would have a successful career on her own.
That was confirmed when she came back into the house from being on the deck with her agent. “Babe,” she called out.
“In the bedroom,” I replied.
A few seconds later, she was walking into our room with a huge grin on her face.
“You got it?” I asked.
She bit her bottom lip and beamed with a nod. “Yes!”
I rushed to her, picked her up, and twirled her around. “Congrats, baby. I knew you would get it.”
“Thank you.”
“Let’s celebrate.” I put her back down but kept her in my arms.
“Okay, but first I need to call my parents.”
“Go ahead. I’ll call and make reservations for dinner.” Ayla’s eyes widened. “I mean—”
“No.” She smiled. “I told you that once I felt as though I could get stuff on my own, we could tell people, and I think this qualifies as my own.”
I grinned. “Hell yeah, it does.”
I made reservations for Beauty & Essex. It was modern and intimate, and the perfect place for Ayla and me to have a quiet romantic dinner out on the town. I ordered a nice bottle of wine that paired perfectly with our entrees.
“So”—I leaned forward—“now that we’re out in the open, are you going to go with me to my premiere for “The Man on the Edge”?
“I was already going to go with you,” she admitted.
I furrowed my brow. “Were you?”
She shrugged and took a sip of her white wine. “Of course.”
“But I thought you didn’t want to be out in public with me?”
Ayla sighed. “I want to scream that you’re my boyfriend at the top of my lungs, but I also want to do this on my own.”
“You are.”
“I know, and while we were driving over here, I was thinking that after I get paid from Sensation for the next Diamond member party, I’ll need to get a dress to wear to your premiere.”
I gave a tight smile. The party was in two days, and I did RSVP for it, but I didn’t want to see Ayla with other people. If we were both members, it would be different, but we weren’t, and it was a guarantee that she would have sex with someone other than me. I wanted to ask her to quit—that I would give her all the money in the world—but I couldn’t do that. I knew she needed to do it on her own, just like her acting career.
“So, we’re going public?” I smiled, not wanting to talk about the club.
She looked around the restaurant. “I’d say we are.”
I leaned across the table and pressed my lips to hers. I didn’t care who was around. My woman had given me the green light, and now everyone was going to know.
After dessert, I paid the bill and then grabbed Ayla’s hand, lacing our fingers and walking out of the restaurant. In true LA fashion, the paparazzi were waiting. It amazed me how they knew where to go to see celebrities, but, of course, word traveled fast in La La Land.
“Walker! Walker! Over here!”
“Ready for this?” I whispered into Ayla’s ear.
She looked up at me and beamed. “Yep.”
We took a few steps forward. I was still holding her hand, and I wasn’t letting go as we waited for the valet to get my car.
“Walker! Are you and Ayla together?” someone shouted.
I looked down into her eyes, and instead of answering verbally, I kissed her. I could hear the clicking of cameras the entire time our lips were sealed together. There was no tongue, but only a few seconds of our mouths connected. When we broke apart, I looked at the group of paps and asked, “Does that answer your question?”
Ayla left for Sensation a few hours before I did. She needed to be there to go over her role for the evening, and I had tried to act as though it wasn’t bothering me.
“I don’t think I’ll be able to meet up with you tonight,” she’d said.
I’d smiled tightly. “Okay. I’ll just grab a drink and find
some of my friends to catch up with.”
“Friends?”
“Yeah, some of my actor friends go to Sensation.”
“Oh. Well, that’s good. I was wondering what you’d be doing.”
“Not participating,” I’d stated.
She’d stopped brushing her long black hair. “Are you okay with this?”
“Does it matter?” I’d challenged.
Ayla had balked slightly and blinked as though she was slightly confused at my response. “Yes, it does.”
I’d taken a deep breath. “To be honest, it’s going to be weird seeing you with someone else even though I know it’s just your job.”
She’d frowned and wrapped her arms around my neck. “It’s honestly hard for me too.”
“Then quit.”
“I want to, but what if “Esquire” only lasts one season? I’ll be back to no paycheck.”
“You’d think that I’d kick you out for not paying rent that you insist on paying me?” She’d opened her mouth as though she was going to respond and then closed it. I’d tilted her chin, so she was looking up at me and directly into my eyes. “I’m not faulting you for working at Sensation since I’m a member myself, but now that we’re officially together and the entire world knows, I’m not really feeling this lifestyle anymore. I just want to be with you.”
“And I just want to be with you.”
“Then quit. Whatever happens with acting, we’ll deal with it together. If you can’t pay your rent with money, I’m sure I can think of other ways you can pay for it.” I’d winked.
I thought about our conversation as I drove to the mansion. Sensation really wasn’t for me anymore. I didn’t want to be in a house full of people having sex and getting off. I just wanted to be with Ayla. I wanted to be wrapped in a blanket under the stars at our house drinking wine and laughing and talking, and only us fucking. I was, however, thankful for the club because if I weren’t a member, and if she wasn’t a performer, then I didn’t think we would have gotten together.
Or maybe we would have.
We’d never know.
I grabbed a drink once I was inside just like I told Ayla I would. My plan was to find Michael Zapino and talk shop with him, but by the time I found him, he was otherwise engaged, so I just went up to my room. A room that I didn’t feel I belonged in anymore. I was almost somber as I looked around the room that looked as though it could be in a magazine and not my beachfront house that was bright and airy.
It just didn’t feel like me anymore.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Ayla
I looked at the Shibari rope that Stephen had in his hand. We were waiting for our cue to go up on stage in the yellow room to perform a scene for the members, but as I looked at the rope and the man holding it, I realized he wasn’t the one I wanted to be with at that moment.
I wanted Walker.
I wanted Walker forever, and I knew that he was somewhere in the mansion not having sex.
“This doesn’t feel right,” I whispered.
Stephen looked over at me. “What?”
My heart started to race, and my palms became sweaty, and I felt as though I was about to pass out. “I can’t do this.”
Stephen reached out his hand to stop me, but I was already walking away and into the kitchen area that was behind the closed door. “Ayla,” he called out.
“I’m sorry, I gotta go,” I said over my shoulder as I walked faster.
Hannah stepped in front of me just as I was about to enter the hall to make my way to the changing room. “What’s wrong?”
I looked into her blue eyes. “I can’t do this anymore.”
“What do you mean?”
I hesitated for a moment and then said, “I’m sorry, Han, but I quit.”
She balked. “You quit?”
I stepped around her. “I know. It’s the worst timing ever, but I just can’t do this.”
She grabbed my wrist and stopped me. I thought she was going to yell at me, but instead, she asked, “Is this because of Walker?”
My body relaxed at his name. “Yes.”
Hannah smiled tightly. “I’m surprised you lasted this long.”
“Really?”
“Well, usually people quit because their partner isn’t okay with their job—”
“He isn’t.”
She patted my arm. “I’d say I’m surprised given he knows this lifestyle, but I’m not. It’s hard sharing when in a new relationship. Once you build trust, let me know, and we’ll get you back in there.”
I knew Walker trusted me since we were in the same house, and he assumed I was having sex with someone else, but I didn’t argue with Hannah. Instead, I smiled and gave her a quick hug before turning to go find my man. I also knew that I wouldn’t be back. I only wanted Walker, and a dog running on the beach as we took nightly walks along the shoreline. I no longer needed Sensation to make ends meet.
I needed Walker Payne.
I hurried down the hall to the changing room, grabbed my stuff, and quickly slipped on my jeans and T-shirt over my bra and panties. I didn’t know where Walker would be, but I figured the best place to check first was his room. I knocked and turned the knob, and the door opened. I didn’t see him at first, but as I walked in, I saw that he was out on his balcony looking out at the twinkling LA skyline.
I walked up behind him and slid my arms around his waist. “Guess what?”
Walker turned, my arms still around him, and once he took in my attire, he furrowed his brows. “What?”
I beamed up at him. “I quit.”
His hazel eyes lit up. “Really?”
I nodded. “Yeah, just now. I couldn’t keep doing this.”
He grabbed the back of my head and brought it against his chest, holding me tight against him. “Thank fucking God.”
“But I imagine I need to leave the property before they throw me out.”
He let go of me and grabbed my hand. “Then let’s go home, baby.”
EPILOGUE
Walker
Eight Months Later …
Thanks to the paparazzi and Star Nation, everyone in the world knew that Ayla and I were dating and living together. Ayla had started to film weekly for “Esquire,” and we were trying to spend as much time together as possible given I was traveling a lot.
We were making it work.
Even though we had gone to two of my own movie premieres, tonight was special. Tonight, was the premiere of “An Unexpected Christmas,” and it was the first time Ayla would see herself on the big screen.
“You’re making breakfast?” Ayla asked as she walked into the kitchen yawning.
“It’s a big day, baby. We need to keep our energy up.”
“You usually have a protein shake,” she argued.
I chuckled. “It’s a special day, and I’m making pancakes.”
She grinned. “It is a special day, huh?”
I poured batter onto the griddle. “And it’s going to be a long night, so sit down and let me feed you.”
Ayla rolled her eyes playfully and sat at the breakfast bar. “I’m glad we get to walk in together. I’m so nervous.”
“Don’t be nervous. People are going to love the movie.”
“I hope so.”
My heart rate increased as I thought about what I was about to do. I took a deep breath, removed the pancakes from the griddle, and with my back turned to Ayla, I put a diamond ring on top of the short stack. I turned and placed the plate in front of her, and as her eyes widened in surprise, I got down on one knee.
“Wildcat, when I accepted the role of Tim Smith, it was after my agent told me I needed to do something other than action movies. That I needed to show people I had a softer side. I never expected that it would lead me to you. You were definitely my unexpected Christmas if you will, and I love everything about you from your awesome memory for remembering your lines to your pencil skirts that hug your ass just right. Will you walk in on my arm tonight to ou
r movie premiere as my fiancé? Will you marry me, baby?”
Her grin stretched wide, and she started to nod excitedly. “Yes! Oh my God, yes!”
I stood and pulled her into my arms and captured her mouth, kissing her with everything I had in me. We broke apart after several long seconds. “I love you, Ayla.”
“I love you too, Walker.”
When I accepted the role of Tim Smith, I didn’t realize that the movie, “An Unexpected Christmas,” would become my unexpected forever.
But sometimes the best things in life happen unexpectedly.
The End.
